Christian Benteke scores quickest-ever World Cup goal

Christian Benteke has scored after just seven seconds against Gibraltar as Belgium went on to thrash the minnows.

The Crystal Palace striker pounced on a loose pass from the kick-off in tonight’sWorld Cup Qualifier between the two nations, before beating a defender as he broke into the box and firing past Deren Ibrahim of Dartford FC in the Gibraltan goal.

The goal was the fastest in Belgian national team history, coming less than ten seconds into the game.

It was also the quickest ever in a World Cup Qualifier, beating the previous record set by Davide Gualtieri.

That goal came in 1993 for San Marino, against England of all teams, with the striker taking advantage of a poor pass-back from Stuart Pearce for David Seaman.

Benteke was part of a strong Belgium line-up taking on Gibraltar in the World Cup qualifier, with their line-up including Thibaut Courtois, Axel Witsel, who scored the side’s second on the night, and Eden Hazard of Chelsea.

He went on to bag a hat-trick against Gibraltar, with additional strikes in the 43rd and 56th minute, following goals from Axel Witsel (19 minutes) and Dries Mertens (51 minutes) respectively.

Eden Hazard put the icing on the cake, making it 6-0 in the 79th minute.
