Zenit being eliminated earlier this week from the Russian Cup from Arsenal Tula, visited Moscow for the Russian “classico” against CSKA, looking for a win that would extend their lead in the Russian Premier League.
Starting stronger than Slutsky’s team, Zenit scored an early goal in Khimki arena at the 6′ minute with Javi Garcia who got the rebound from Witsel’s header (hitting the post) after three consecutive corner kicks.
A couple of good chances from Natcho and Dzagoev were produced from CSKA but Lodygin and Zenit’s strong defence sent two teams to half time with St. Petersburg holding the 0-1.
CSKA Moscow expectedly pressed more during the second half looking for the equalizer with Zenit being very dangerous in the counter attack. Lodygin again was there when needed, Kerzhakov was denied a penalty and the Blue-White-Sky blues looked more likely to double the lead at any minute.
A nice shot by Axel at the 70′ missing by inches and another good chance from Moscow’s Dzagoev minutes before the whistle concluded the evening with Zenit celebrating a huge away win that takes them +7 from second CSKA in the league.
