Trailing to two first-half Rafael Borre goals, Borussia Dortmund produced an incredible second-half rally, scoring three times through Thorgan Hazard, Jude Bellingham and Mahmoud Dahoud to leave Eintracht Frankfurt crestfallen at the last.
Hoping to cut the gap at the top of the standings to six points after leaders Bayern Munich slipped up on Friday night, second-placed Dortmund attacked from the off. A searching ball from Mats Hummels found Thomas Meunier with the Belgian then sending a high drive at goal that was finger-tipped onto the post by Kevin Trapp. Frankfurt’s ‘keeper subsequently denied Erling Haaland, before the game’s balance swung the way of the in-form hosts. Eintracht’s assist king this season, Filip Kostic, turned provider once again when the 29-year-old’s whipped free-kick into the danger zone was directed into the corner of the net by Borre, despite the best efforts of Gregor Kobel to keep the ball out. Kobel denied Kostic a second moments later but Eintracht weren’t to be kept out in the 24th minute with Borre taking full advantage of Marco Reus’s failed attempt to clear before drilling home. A pulsating first half would end with Evan N’Dicka and Donyell Malen finding the woodwork at either end.
Going into this game having racked up an incredible 18 points from a possible 21 prior to the mid-season break, Oliver Glasner’s team continued to purr following the restart at Deutsche Bank Park. After executing a nutmeg on on Emre Can, Jesper Lindstrom – a scorer of four goals in his previous six games – fired at Kobel when 3-0 looked the more likely outcome. Despite trailing, the visitors continued to boss the possession stats and after Julian Brandt and Haaland both had decent efforts, BVB finally managed to pull a goal back when substitute Hazard latched onto Haaland’s through ball before applying the finish. Marco Rose’s men came again and were deservedly level with two minutes to play, Bellingham heading in from Meunier’s centre. Incredibly, it was to get even better for the Black and Yellows when Dahoud calmly steered in at the last to complete the most dramatic of turnarounds.
